Justin Stuart

Justin Stuart (b. 1964) grew up in Beirut, and has spent the last 10 years living and painting in Scarborough, Cape Town. Stuart began his artistic career busking in Berlin, making enough money to survive while travelling in Europe. In 1995 he boarded a ship from Gibraltar to Cape Town, and has spent the last 20 years engaged in a variety of artistic activities. He was involved in various squats throughout the country, before joining BDI (Back Door Initiative), a street performance troupe which took him to Johannesburg. As a part of BDI, Stuart took part in carnival parades, pyrotechnic displays and various alternative forms of theatre. His rich and varied experience has led him to the coast, and much of his work is now engaged in developing a visual language for the ocean.
