Lisa Rigby (United Kingdom/ South Africa)

Lisa Rigby, a mixed media painter and installative artist producing from Eastside Studios in Cape Town negotiates internal dialogues through the use of brightly laden colour palettes and multi-medium paintings depicting characters otherwise considered ambiguous or foreign in nature to the viewer.

The Manchester born artist adopts her subject matter via research or archival methodologies in order to convey internal thoughts or processing of common day dilemmas found in contemplative and problematic communities, as well as the social encounters between varied people.

Rigby incorporates layers of bees wax and brightly laden imposto in order to confront the viewer whilst simultaneously allowing for unsuspecting internal evaluation and assessment. Themes involve carefully contemplated narratives semiotic-ally constructed to relate to those of children's fables, however in turn do not do so. Her influences include Marina Abramovic, Egon Schiele, Annette Messenger amougnst others and can be exemplified by her selection of subject matter and circumstances depicted in painterly works.
